Think

I was reading the paper today and I was appalled at how they were portraying the terrorist from Oslo. From the Los Angeles Times today:

In the photographs now circulating around the world, Anders Behring Breivik looks almost preppy.Neatly parted blond hair frames a boyishly handsome face. The upturned collar of a peach-colored polo shirt pokes through a dark Izod sweater. It’s hard to reconcile the softly smiling young man in these professional studio shots with the monster who witnesses say donned a police uniform and ruthlessly hunted down scores of young Norwegians, firing at those who jumped into freezing water in a desperate bid to escape.

Just because he looks “conventional” - a White, blue-eyed, blonde male - it’s hard to identify him as a terrorist and as an individual fully capable of murdering children and countless of people? A terrorist is a terrorist; and this man from Oslo should be classified as such. He created fear and terror in an area that was not familiar with the horrors it experienced two days ago for decades. This graphic is spot on regarding his public portrayal - terrorists are extremists driven by a rooted belief. All Muslims are not terrorists, just like all right-wing Christians are not terrorists. Both Al-Qaeda and Breizik are minorities in their social and political contexts. Because of this minority status, they are so driven that they will resort to anything to see this belief represented and salient in their society - and what is better than terror?
On July 17, Breivik quoted John Stuart Mill on his Twitter account. I think this quote sums up the core of what terrorism and a person who commits it is:

“One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests.”
